Your safety is not a game!
I am part of a program called Superheros 2018. Superheroes is an entrepreneurship & leadership program for girls ages 13 to 17-years. The program is four months long, and during those months we get to design a project with our chosen groups. My group’s and my current project focuses on the idea that young people, especially girls, should learn self-defense, so they will be able to defend themselves during any possible situations of harassment. We hope that this kind of cases won’t happen, but it’s always better to be prepared than helpless. At the beginning of the project, we did a questioner, where we asked young girls about their knowledge about and experience with self-defense. Out of 200 people, 50% had been in a situation where they needed to know self-defense. And only 18% were sure they knew what to do. This led to us creating Fighterellas.
Our group hosted a successful self-defense class on 13 of January for all young women ages 15-25. It took place at the Saku Sports Centre. The instructor introduced some of the basic moves and talked about the importance of self-defense awareness. Self-defense classes also help you to feel more comfortable on an everyday basis. If you are interested in joining one of the self-defense classes next time, then feel free to contact us.
